Introduction to MÜST
1. Preface: The background of music copyright society.
* Intellectual property includes Reproduction rights, Public Recitation rights, Public Presentation rights, Public Broadcasting rights, Public Transmission rights, Public Performance rights, Adaptation rights, Rental rights and Import rights.
* MÜST administers Public Broadcasting rights, Public Transmission rights and Public Performance rights for the musical works.
* To facilitate the right owners and the music users to duly execute their rights and obligation, MÜST integrates the activities of licensing, collection and distribution. To protect the right owners, MÜST can take legal actions against music users who infringe music intellectual property without acquiring proper license from MÜST.
2. Legislation and organization.
* MÜST (Music Copyright Society of Chinese Taipei) was established by the right owners in Taiwan on January 01, 1999 based on the regulation of “Copyright Intermediary Society Act” which was announced and enforced on November 05, 1997. MÜST was approved by TIPO (Taiwan Intellectual Property Office) and obtained the registration certificate on Many 26, 1999 from the court.
* The members of MÜST include individual members and group members such as publishing companies. The Chairmen from first term to fifth term are listed as following.
First term : Wu Tsu-Tsu.
Second term: Chen Yu Zhen and Ding Xiao Wen.
Third term: Ji Ming Yang.
Fourth term: Han Zheng Hao, Bao Xiao Song and Huang Qing Yuan .
Fifth term: Wu Tsu-Tsu.
* By the end of July 2008, MÜST has a total of 901 members. Our creators include Chinese songs creators, Taiwanese songs creators, Hakka songs creators, popular songs creators, classic music creators, commercial music creators and Internet music creators. MÜST is the most representative music copyright society in Taiwan.
* MÜST is the member of CISAC (International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers) which is an international organization that works closely with UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization). CISAC's member societies collectively administer the artistic works including music, drama, literature, audiovisual, painting, visual arts around the world. By the end of July 2008, CISAC has a total of 222 members covering 108 countries. As the sole active member of CISAC for music copyright in Taiwan, MÜST, by entering into the bilateral agreement with CISAC's members, can therefore administer over 17,000,000 musical works around the world, including 185,000 Chinese musical works.
3. Operation and Development
MÜST's major licensing fields are briefly described as below:
Television: All the 4 terrestrial TV stations and major satellite/cable TV stations have been licensed.
Radio: All the major radio stations are licensed.
KTV's, Karaokes.
Concerts& Live Performances.
Internet.
Others: major airlines, hotels, department stores and chain stores.
MÜST also expands the licensing activities to include the licensing for in t ernet and ringtone, ringback tone, etc.
